Abstract

With the rise of neo-liberal thoughts after the 1980s, a transformation and reform wave was experienced in higher education, while the state universities were still in education it was allowed to open foundation universities. With 2547 coded Higher Education Law which was enacted after the 1980 coup in Turkey, the non-profit foundation Universities opened and they began to administer by trustees. The Board of Trustees which are elected by the Founding Foundation Management manages the university both administrative and financially. From this structure which is in the foundation universities that does a public service, it is expected to manage the university by not thinking the university as a company. The aim of this study is to examine the number of members, their demographic structures, education levels, kinshipties of the trustees which are in the foundation universities. Additionally, to determine the effects of these trustees on theu niversity. As a result in Turkey the demographic structure of the trustees is not enough. The diversity of trustee jobs is poor and they are mostly academician. Trustees are mostly middleaged and male. Number of members are below the world average and it is common to see relatives in university. They have authority to manage the university both administrative and financially.
