Abstract

The city of Elbistan is a county of Kahramanmaraş which is at the north-east of Mediterranean Region and located at the Top Fırat Part of the East-Anatolia Region. In this study the phases of foundation and development of Elbistan city are evaluated within a historical and geographical perspective. Having been founded between Karaelbistan and Hasankendi; Elbistan was civilized by the help of Hittites and has existed in the current territory since 1085. Its name was transformed into Elbistan from Ablasta. Elbistan was made capital city in the rein of Dulkadiroğlu Seigniory. Being neglected in the period of Ottomans, Elbistan was subject to invasions for many times. Because of being far from the province centre, it has shown a development like a big city. Having had a town appearance between the years of 1900 -1987, Elbistan has started to show a progress after 1987, and now it has a big city atmosphere. Today the urban area has reached to 43.5 km2. The prevailing sectors in Elbistan are agriculture, trading, service sector and transportation. Particularly after 1985 there has been an enhancement in the progress of its economy. 88.895 people live in Elbistan (2011). The City of Elbistan has affected surrounding counties with its historical heritage, geographical location, economic development and level of welfare.Key words: City of Elbistan, Settlement history, Function of City, Urban development, The problems of the city.

Elbistan Şehri, Akdeniz Bölgesi'nin kuzeydoğusundaki Kahramanmaraş iline bağlı, Doğu Anadolu Bölgesi'nin Yukarı Fırat Bölümü'nde yer alan Elbistan ilçesinin idari merkezini oluşturmaktadır. Bu çalışmada arşiv ve arazi incelemeleri yapılarak Elbistan şehrinin kuruluş ve gelişme evreleri tarihi coğrafya perspektifi ile değerlendirilmiştir. Elbistan, Karaelbistan ile Hasankendi arasında kurulmuş, Hititlerle medenileşmiş ve 1085 yılından günümüze kadar da bugünkü yerinde sürekliliğini korumuştur. İsmi Ablasta'dan Elbistan'a dönüşmüştür. Elbistan, Dulkadir Beyliği döneminde başkent yapılmıştır. Osmanlılar Dönemi'nde göz ardı edilen Elbistan, defalarca istilaya uğramıştır. İl merkezine uzak olmasından dolayı şehir fonksiyonları gelişmiştir. 1900-1987 arası bir kasaba görünümünde olan Elbistan, 1987 sonrası şehir morfolojisindeki planlı değişimle kent havasına bürünmüştür. Günümüzde şehirsel alanın yüzölçümü 43,5 km2'ye ulaşmıştır. Elbistan ekonomisinde tarım, ticaret, hizmet sektörü ve ulaştırma faaliyetleri ön plana çıkmaktadır. Özellikle 1985'den sonra ekonomisindeki canlanma artmıştır. Elbistan'da 88.895 kişi yaşamaktadır (2011). Elbistan Şehri, sahip olduğu tarihi mirası, coğrafi konumu, ekonomik gelişmişliği ve halkın refah düzeyi ile çevre ilçeleri etkisi altına almıştır.Anahtar Kelimeler: Elbistan Şehri, Yerleşme tarihi, Şehirsel fonksiyonlar, Şehir gelişimi, Şehrin sorunları.
