Abstract

The history of the problem of universals is one of the most ancient problem of philosophy which goes back to Plato and Aristotle. An aspect of the problem is related to properties of the objects. Properties are the qualities like whiteness, highness, being two meters. The thinkers who advocate the idea that one have to refer universals to account for the properties are called realists; while the thinkers who assert one doesn't need to them are called nominalists. The former one has varieties like Platonist, Aristotelian or Russellian and, second one has varieties like predicate nominalism, class nominalism, resemblance nominalism etc. The other aspect of the problem is the problem about abstract singulars which are entitle the properties such as `redness`, `triangularity`. Are these terms singular terms? Or are they are syncategorematic expressions which have no meaning by themselves at all? There are different answer to these problems given by realist or nominalist thinkers. However, each of the answers led to different problems. Besides, when carefully examined one can see every theory has its basic assumptions that are not explained in the theory. In this study, we analyze these ideas and offer a realist approach based on the idea of God as an alternative theory. The idea of God can be reliable ground that one can account for the assorted dimensions of the problem.
