A thermoelastic martensitic phase transformation is responsible for itsextraordinary properties such as shape memory effect and superelasticity. Thenear equiatomic Ti-Ni alloys are the commercially most exploited SMAs becauseof the unique combination of these properties and superior ductility, strength,fatigue resistance and corrosion resistance. The properties of Ti-Ni SMAs arevery sensitive to composition and the processing parameters. The properties ofTi-Ni SMAs can be modified to a great extent by choice of composition,mechanical working and heat treatment.Thermo-mechanical treatments are required to strengthen the matrix and improvethe shape memory characteristics. Plastic deformation and subsequent annealingis the common way to improve shape memory properties.In the present study, Ti- 50 at% Ni wire specimens are produced and used for theinvestigation of the effect of different heat treatment and cold working processeson shape memory characteristics. To investigate the thermomechanical behaviorof differently processed wire specimens, a fully computerized servo hydraulicthermomechanical testing machine was designed and constructed. Testingmachine was capable to perform different types of tests that are selected by theuser. It can both heat and cool the specimen automatically according to the testingsequence by applying DC current directly through the SMA wire or by sendingliquid nitrogen into the cooling chamber. Temperature is measured by a K-typethermocouple directly mounted on the wire specimen with a glass tape. Force thatis applied to the specimen is produced by hydraulic power unit with a doubleaction cyclinder and it is controlled by a controller which takes the feedback fromthe loadcell and LVDT (Linear Variable Distance Transducer). During performigthermomechanical-tests all the data of loadcell, LVDT and thermocouple arecollected by a data acqusition system integrated with a host computer thatoperates the program XPC Target.Ti-Ni alloy with equiatomic composition is prepared in vacum induction furnace.Specimen cast in the form of rod was then hot swaged. Subsequent to swaging,cold wire drawing, intermediate annealing at 500 ºC and water quenching wasapplied to obtain SMA wire with a diameter of 1.52 mm. Ti-Ni wires producedwere subjected to four different processes. All the samples were initially solutionheat treated at 925 ºC for 30 minutes prior to water quenching. Some of thesamples were further treated by an intermediate anneal at 500 ºC. To see theeffect of cold working; prior to intermediate annealing, 20 % or 40 % cold workwas applied to another group of specimens.To study the shape memory characteristics of specimens subjected to the abovementioned processes, four types of test, namely constant stress free recovery test,constant strain free recovery test, constant stress constrained recovery test andconstant strain constrained recovery test, were designed and applied cyclically.The tests have shown that the stress plateau observed in the first cycle of the testsdisappear upon cycling and the shape memory characteristics improve andstabilize with cycling. Once trained by cycling, fractional free recovery wasobserved to reach to 100 % and recovery stress to reach 120% of the appliedstress if shape recovery is prevented.Keywords: TiNi, SMA, Shape Memory Alloy, Titanium, Nickel,Thermomechanical Characterization.

Bu özelliklerin eşsiz kombinasyonu, yükseksüneklik, dayanç, yorulma ve korozyon direnci eşit atomik orandaki TiNialaşımınının ticari olarak en çok yararlanılan şekil bellekli alaşım olmasına yolaçmıştır. TiNi şekil bellekli alaşımların özellikleri bileşimine ve işlemdeğişkenlerine çok hassas olduğundan bileşim seçimi,mekanik işlemler ve ısılişlemlerle TiNi ŞBA'nın özellikleri büyük oranda değiştirilebilir.Isıl mekanik işlemler alaşımın dayancını ve şekil bellek özelliklerini arttırmakiçin gereklidir. Plastik deformasyon sonrası uygulanan tavlama işlemi ise şekilbellek özelliğini geliştirmek için kullanılan genel bir yöntemdir.Bu çalışmada Ti-50 at % Ni tel numuneler üretilerek değişik ısıl işlem ve soğukhadde işlemlerinin şekil bellek özellikleri üzerine olan etkileri araştırılmıştır.Değişik işlemler görmüş tel numunelerin ısıl mekanik davranışlarını araştırmakiçin bilgisayar kontrollü servo hidrolik bir ısıl mekanik test cihazı tasarlanmış veüretilmiştir. Test cihazı kullanıcı tarafından seçilen çeşitli tiplerdeki testleriuygulayabilmektedir. Test cihazı test sırasına göre otomatik olarak numuneyiısıtıp soğutabilmektedir. Isıtma doğrudan tel numune üzerinden DC akımgeçirilmesiyle, soğutma ise soğutma kabinine sıvı azot gönderilmesiylesağlanmış, numune sıcaklığı ise numune üzerine cam bantla yapıştırılan K tipitermokupl ile ölçülmüştür. Numuneye uygulanan kuvvet, çift yönlü silindiresahip bir hidrolik güç ünitesi kullanılarak üretilmiş, ve yük hücresi ve LVDT'denalınan geri besleme verilerini kullanan bir işlemci kullanılarak kontrol edilmiştir.Isıl mekanik testler sırasında yük hücresi, LVDT ve termokupl'dan gelen bütünveriler XPC Target programı kullanılarak bir bilgisayara monte edilmiş veritoplama kartı ile toplanmıştır.Eşit atomik oranlı TiNi alaşımı vakumlu indüksiyon fırınında hazırlanmıştır.Çubuk şeklinde dökülen alaşıma sıcak şekillendirmeyi takiben soğuk tel çekme,500 ºC sıcaklıkta ara tavlama ve suya daldırma işlemleri uygulanarak 1.52 mmçapında şekil bellekli tel numuneler elde edildi. Üretilen Ti-Ni tele dört ayrı işlemuygulandı. Bütün numunelere 925 ºC' de 30 dakika süreyle uygulanan çözelti ısılişlemi sonunda su verildi. Bazı numunelere çözelti ısl işlemini takiben 500 ºC'deara tavlama uygulanırken, soğuk işlemin etkisini görmek için diğer bir gurupnumune, ara tavlamadan önce % 20 veya %40 oranlarında soğuk haddelendi.Yukarıda bahsedilen işlemler uygulanmış numunelerin şekil bellek özelliklerinibelirlemek için sabit gerilim serbest geri dönüşüm, sabit gerinim serbest geridönüşüm, sabit gerilim sınırlandırılmış geri dönüşüm ve sabit gerinimsınırlandırılmış geri dönüşüm olarak adlandırılan dört gurup test döngüsel olarakuygulandı.Testler, ilk döngüde oluşan gerilim düzlüğünün test döngüleriyle birliktekaybolduğunu ve şekil bellek özelliklerinin yine test dögüleriyle geliştiğini vesabitlendiğini göstermiştir. Döngülerle birlikte eğitilen şekil bellekli numeninoransal serbest geri dönüşümün % 100' e, şekil geri kazanımının engellendiğidurumda ise dönüşüm geriliminin % 120'e ulaştığı gözlendi.Anahtar Kelimeler: TiNi, ŞBA, Şekil Bellekli Alaşım, Titanyum, Nikel, Isıl-mekanik Karakterizasyon.
