Abstract

As a longitudinal form of book, manuscripts and printed versions of cönks can be found in libraries. The first examples of cönks are seen in central Asia. The contents of these are Buddhist religious texts. Cönks, which have spread from central Asia to the different regions of the world, have not changed in terms of format, but they have come under the influence of the civilization they are located in terms of their content. We can observe this in cönks written in Arabic, Hebrew, Latin and Cyrillic alphabets. In terms of the texts they contain, cönks are among the important written sources of the Turkish culture in Ottoman field. There isn't a limitation to cönks in terms of compositor and content. In addition to the cönks arranged by calligraphers, there are also cönks arranged by untrained people. Apart from the cönks that take their themes from classical Turkish literature and Turkish folk literaure, there are works that are written in verse and in prose in Arabic-Persian alphabets. Cönks that are organized in terms of lines and pages are more about scholarly and literary topics, while disorganized cönks are comprised of anonymous works.Cönks are important in terms of reflecting the dialects of the region or the locality they are comprised in, the faith and customs, emotions and thoughts, and understanding of life of Turkish people, and revealing riches of oral culture.
