11 ABSTRACT There are detailed scientific studies about whether Total Quality Management (TQM) creates competitive advantage for the firms operating in our country and if it does about how to sustain this advantage. Given the importance of the topic as a potential source of competitive advantage and of sustaining this advantage, TQM is considered. This study consists of three chapters. In the first chapter TQM and concepts of competition were explained. In the second chapter after a rigorous review of the literature, different views on competitive advantage creating effect of TQM and its contribution to the maintenance of this created competitive advantage were reported. In the third chapter under the light of theoretical knowledge presented in the first two chapters, a case-study was established as a study method. In this case-study, which was realised in Dentaş Packaging and Paper Industry Inc, three sources of data were exploited; interviews with top and middle managers, archival records of the company and documents. Data were analysed in two ways. First, related to probable the competitive advantage criteria of TQM, numerical data obtained from archival records were analysed through structural alteration test, CHOW. Then from the interviews common themes were determined and these themes were supported by documents obtained from the firm. In the last phase, conclusion and suggestions were considered. While TQM is effective for creating competitive advantage by increasing productivity and profitability and taking the costs under control, it is not effective for creating a competitive advantage by increasing the market share. On the other hand, as enough numerical data on the speed of introducing a new product into market weren't obtained, effect of TQM on sustaining the competitive advantage couldn't be evaluated via CHOW test. However, from the available data it was observed that TQM has power for creating a competitive advantage. In addition, because of the complex relations involved in TQM applications and their tacitness it was concluded that TQM has the potential for sustaining the advantage.
