Recent advancements in digital technology and stereo algorithm performance have considerably enhanced structured light techniques, these techniques are well-known mainstream techniques used in 3D imaging technology for their simplicity, speed, and robustness to complex or/and untextured scenes. Structured light (SL) algorithms recover the geometry of the scene by projecting different structures or patterns onto each point in the scene to be captured by the camera, the deformation of these patterns, as they fall upon the scene, can then be used in 3D data acquisition. Structured light techniques reconstruct depth by triangulating each camera pixel with its corresponding projector pixel to acquire the reconstruction of 3D data. This is known as patches correlation of pixels between the observed and the reference image, or may also be framed as a local stereo-matching task. Many SL algorithms solve this correspondence task efficiently, without any compromise on the accuracy of depth.A review of several disparity map acquisition techniques using structured light systems has been provided, followed by the calibration techniques for the camera and the projector, as they are instrumentally involved in the accuracy of the ideal outcome. Performance evaluation indexes are clarified, and several 3D imaging schemes based on structured illumination are categorized and compared. Various well-developed SL algorithms, which are diverse in the design of the pattern that falls upon the scene, have been implemented, tested, and categorized by their efficiency and performance. These approaches present substantial benefits, such as the capability of capturing high accuracy 3D geometry with high resolution in a short time frame, that can be employed within several fields such as manufacturing, remote environmental reconstruction, consumer electronics, medicine, communications, and security.
