Abstract

Theoretically even if ideal market structure is a perfect competition market, in practice, it is seen that perfect competition conditions are not met and there is concentration in the markets. These concentrations cause monopolization with the effect of some market entry barriers. In industrial economics entry barriers which have been argued in the frame of structure-conduct-performance paradigm for a long time are examined acccording to Bain's paradigms. However, it is seen that the frame has been enlarged with some criticisms voiced since 1980's. Last quarter of 20th century is a period in which knowledge and technology based markets have been growing. In these markets which are naturally monopolist, concentration is seen more often and trends to monopolization are perceived strongly. With this study, structure-conduct-performance paradigm, the core argument of industrial economics was discussed and the terms of concentration, sunk cost and entry barriers which become prominent with this paradigm were also analyzed. In the last part market situations formed by communication technologies were examined. Keywords: Entry Barriers, Concentration, Herfindahl İndex, Sunk Cost.
