Abstract

Kosovo in the Balkans, today, is in a position of the newest independent country whose independence has been accepted by many countries. However, its territory today is much smaller than its territory during the Ottoman Empire regime in 18th century. This study is based on the territory of Kosovo province in 18th century. The records of 11 districts of Kosovo province at that time are found in the Hurufât Registers. 312 leaves about Kosovo province in the Hurufât Registers which consist of 61 books are transcribed. The study contains information about revealed constructions, obtained from the books along with the contemporary sources. The Ottoman Empire made many innovations for urbanization in the cities of Kosovo province. Also the Empire built many constructions in order to achieve permanent settlement, islamification and to Turkify the region. These constructions include mosques, masjids, namazgahs, schools, madrasahs, dervish lodges, small dervish lodges, shrines, Turkish baths, fountains, etc. With the help of the records of the years (1144-1250) / (1731-1835) in Hurufât Registers, appointments to these institutions are analyzed. The results of the study reveal some constructions which no longer exist and are not mentioned even in the sources. Keywords: Kosovo Province, Hurufât Registers, Rumeli Hurufât Registers, Balkans.
