Purpose: This study investigates the effect of pre-natal education on mother-baby attachment. Material - Method: This education designed as an intervention study seeks to answer the following question: does pre-natal education affect mothers' attachment to their babies? The study was conducted with the pregnant women living in Doğanlar and Mevlana districts in Bornova, İzmir. The pregnant women living in these two districts between November, 2011 and September, 2012 and agreeing to participate in the study are the population of the study. In order to avoid any interaction and influence between the women in these two different districts, 45 pregnant women in Doğanlar made up the control group, while 45 others in Mevlana district the experimental group. The only difference was that the control group did not attend the educational pre-natal workshop. All the participants were given the following forms and questionnaires: `Informed Volunteer Form`, `A survey of current pregnancy information and socio-demographic data and background`, `Pregnancy tracking form`, and `Maternal Attachment İnventory` developed by Muller (1994) and adapted to Turkish context by Kavlak and Şirin (2009). The experimental group was given a four-week program of weekly four-hour educational sessions consisting of theoretical knowledge that may strengthen the pre-natal, while-natal, and post-natal mother-baby attachment. They were also given a program of relaxation and respiration. All the pregnant women were given the Maternal Attachment İnventory in the post-natal first and fourth months via home visitations. Findings: The pregnant women in the experimental group had the following characteristics: the ages of 44.4% range from 23 to 27; the average age was 25.55±4.83 (min=18.0 and max=38.0); 31.1 % are graduate of colleges; 75.6 % do not work; 57.8 % said that there was a balance between their income and expenses; 97.8 % had health security; 75.6 % were core family type; 71.1 % were married for 1 to 5 years; and 15.6 % had relative husbands. On the other hand, the pregnant women in the control group had the following characteristics: the ages of 31.1 % range from 18 to 22; the average age was 26.31±4.91 (min=18.0 and max=39.0); 51.1 % are graduate of primary school; 91.9 % do not work; 57.8 % said that there was a balance between their income and expenses; 100.0 % had health security; 66.7 % were core family type; 57.7 % were married for 1 to 5 years; and 28.9 % had relative husbands. To calculate the reliability of maternal Attachment İnventory, crohnbach alpha was used. The first and fourth results of both groups were 0.91, 0.89, 0.93, and 0.96 respectively. The average inventory scores of mothers in the experimental group were calculated as the post-natal first month 93.79±7.90 (min=73.0-max=104.0) and post-natal fourth month 101.24±4.60 (min=79.0-max=104.0). On the other hand, the scores in the control groups were calculated as the post-natal first month 87.29±9.65 (min=71.0-max=104.0) and post-natal fourth month 96.00±9.09 (min=75.0-max=104.0). The median value was 96.0 in the experimental group in the first month, while it was 90.0 in the control group. A significant difference was found in the scores of the first months between both experimental and control group (Mann-Whitney U: 617.000, p<0.05). On the other hand, the median value was 103.0 in the experimental group in the fourth month, while it was 100.0 in the control group. A significant difference was found in the scores of the fourth months between both experimental and control group (Mann-Whitney U: 569.500, p<0.05).Conclusions and suggestions: The study concludes that the pregnant women in the experimental group had higher maternal attachment compared to those in the control group. Based on this, it was interpreted that the pre-natal education affects mother-baby attachment. The pre- and post- natal education workshops were proved to be important in maternal attachment. The following recommendations were made: -easily accessible unpaid pregnant education workshops should be given by the local health centers -educating midwives and nurses in the pre-service training or in-service education -establishing the necessary conditions for designing these educational workshops in the official health institutions-highlighting in the educational pregnancy seminars the importance of mother-baby attachment in human life-providing necessary support and making rudimentary process evaluations for mother-baby attachment during regular home visitations made by nurses and midwives Key words: nurses and midwives, pre-natal educational classes, maternal attachment.
