Abstract

Northern Somalia is located on the west of Gulf of Aden and the entry point of Red Sea area. Its location is very strategic. The first European power that burned cities in Northern Somalia was the Portuguese Empire. However, Memluk Sultanate could not stop the Portuguese Navy in Egyptian African shores. After that, Ottoman Empire captured Egypt and its influence spread to Somali shores including Berbera port. During the late 19th century, Northern Somalia was under the rule of Ottomans. But in the same century, The Ottoman Empire handed the port over to the Egyptians and it subsequently came under British rule. England captured this port as the Egyptian rule in this area came to an end. Finally with these circumstances, Ottoman Empire had tried to regain its influence in the area but its attempts ended in vain. The purpose of this study ıs the evaluatıon of the Ottoman rule in Northern Somalia and the effects of related events. One of the major events was the withdrawal of the Egyptians whcih led to the begining of European colonial rule in Somalia.References are collected from many different resources such as the Ottoman Archıves, resources related to the history of Somalia, and relevant information from other archives in libraries. Finally, with these circumstances, the Ottoman Empire did not manage to regain its influence in this area. In the 19th century, The golden age of imperialism, the victims of rebellion against the European colonial administration in Somalia turned out to be the Somali people.
