The main purpose of this thesis is to look at documentary photography with a critical eye, to make room for discussions about the changing content, form and the social function of documentary photography through a specific sub-genre/style while searching for how it has been informed by the social, economical and technological structure of the age.First chapter is about the rise of documentary photography, its early examples and the social, political and the cultural atmosphere of the time. Late 19th century America has a crucial importance with regard to the rise of documentary photography. The functions that the documentary photography took on in this period has granted the genre its identity and made to be a reference for future periods. The second chapter sets out to analyze the documentary photography as a witness to a world of conflicts and unrest in the first half of 20th century and focuses on the development of photo-journalism as a genre affecting documentary photography. It has widened its base and increased its activity as a result of the appearance of new techniques, new media and the new needs of the society. Documentary photography has acted as the common conscience of humanity and registered the big tragedies in the world history, and along with these tendencies, has been directed by a general humanist approach. As a result of its increasing functions, prevalence and visibility in public sphere, documentary photography has been a subject of enquiry for the critics. These critiques are examined in this thesis with historical and current examples. Third chapter deals with the reflections of the social and cultural structure changing with the second half of the 20th century on documentary photographers and with the appearance of new orientations. The transformations in the attitudes of the photographers have caused dramatic changes in conventional documentary photography practices. The missions of building grand narratives and of reflecting the conscience of humanity has given way to tendencies such as viewing the world through a subjective perspective, telling sub-culture stories or personal experiences. These tendencies continuing to gain more importance over time contains within itself the changes in the documentary photography?s content, form and the medium through which it is offered to the public.

Bu tezin temel amacı belgesel fotoğrafa eleştirel bir gözle bakmak, onun içindeki belirli bir alt tür/tarz üzerinden belgesel fotoğrafın, değişim halindeki içerik, biçim ve toplumsal işlevine dair tartışmalara yer vermek ve dönemin toplumsal, politik, ekonomik ve teknolojik yapısından nasıl etkilendiğini araştırmaktır. Bu bağlam içinde tezin ağırlık noktasını kişisel hikayeler üreten belgesel fotoğrafçılar oluşturmaktadır.Birinci bölümü belgesel fotoğrafın doğuşu, türünün ilk örnekleri ve dönemin toplumsal, siyasal ve kültürel atmosferinin yansımaları oluşturmaktadır. Bu bağlamda 19. yüzyıl sonu Amerika'sının belgesel fotoğrafın çıkışı açısından kritik bir önemi vardır. Belgesel fotoğrafın bu dönemde üstlendiği işlevler onun kimliğini oluşturmak anlamında gelecek dönemler için de referans olmuştur. İkinci bölümde 20. yüzyılın ilk yarısında dünyanın içinden geçtiği çatışmalı ve çalkantılı ortamda belgesel fotoğrafın tanıklığı ve belgesel fotoğrafı etkileyen bir tür olarak foto-jurnalizmin gelişimi incelenmiştir. Ortaya çıkan yeni tekniklerin, mecraların ve toplumsal ihtiyaçların sonucu olarak tabanı genişlemiş ve etkinliğini arttırmıştır. Ayrıca belgesel fotoğraf büyük trajedilerde insanlığın ortak vicdanı olarak tarihe kayıtlar düşmüş ve bu eğilimleri içeren hümanist bir yaklaşım hakim olmuştur. Genişleyen işlevleri, yaygınlığı ve kamusal alandaki görünürlüğü sonucu belgesel fotoğraf eleştirmenlerin incelemelerine konu olmuştur. Bu eleştiriler tarihsel ve güncel örnekleriyle birlikte incelenmiştir. Batı merkezlerinde, 20.yüzyılın ikinci yarısından itibaren değişen toplumsal ve kültürel yapının, belgesel fotoğrafçılar üzerine yansımaları ve ortaya çıkan yeni yönelimler üçüncü bölümde incelenmiştir. Fotoğrafçının tavrında yaşanan farklılıklar alışılagelmiş belgesel fotoğraf uygulamalarında köklü değişimlere sebep olmuştur. Büyük anlatılar oluşturma ve insanlığın vicdanını yansıtma misyonlarının yerini dünyayı öznel bir perspektiften görüntüleme, alt kültür hikayeleri veya kişisel deneyimler aktarma gibi eğilimler almıştır. Ağırlık kazanarak devam eden bu eğilim belgesel fotoğrafın içerik, biçim ve kamuya sunulduğu ortam bağlamında değişiklikler barındırmaktadır.
