Abstract

Since its foundation Ottoman Empire made census in certain periods in order to ensure the financial control of the population living in the territory. These census also provide important data for determining the demographic structure of the period. In a modern sense, the first census was made in 1831. Dated 1932 and numbered 3695 civil registration book of the Tarsus Sanjak was kept after this census which is the main source of this study. As a result of the analysing of the Tarsus civil registration book numbered 3695, 57 settlements were identified which consisted of village, neighborhood, mounatin pass, communion and tribes in the Kusun, Elvanlı and Ulaş towns within the Sanjak of Tarsus. The boundaries of the towns and the administrative structure of the Tarsus Sanjak are determined by the location of these settlements at that time. In addition, population data such as name and family nicknames, military potential of the population, persons with disabilities, physical features and occupation types are tried to be revealed.
