AK Party, a short time after its foundation in 2001, came to power in the 2002 election and it is the political party that has succeed in being the governing party for 16 years up to the time this thesis is written. In this long period, it has progressed a variety of transformations, ruptures, and improvements. It has adopted a constituent power posture and attempted to turn its party identity that had been developed in its periphery into a national identity as long as it has institutionalized its power and ossify its electorate. This period has brought a tendency of the frequent and popular use of historical references, one of the most significant instruments in the construction of national identities, in the political area.Hence, this study, first of all expounding the relationship between nation building and the use of history for the political purposes, tries to evaluate AK Party's performances in this area –without putting it to certain periodization- in a timewise manner. This appraisal, essentially in the area that is opened by the constituent claim reflected by the `New Turkey` discourse, issues to search the historical references used as reinforcement by AK Party's political and social imagination. The thesis aims to analyze the process of its use of historical references during AK Party's rule, how it used official history and transformed it, and what kind of ground the Ottoman heir kept in this transformation. For attaining these purposes, the thesis uses mostly newspaper scannings, the Party's written sources, the discourses of the Party's spokesmen and of those writers, thinkers and historians who are close to the Party. Keywords: AK Party, National Identity, History, New Turkey, Neo-Ottomanism.
