Abstract

SUMMARYThe Church C (Temple of Dionysus), on the mainland of the ancient city of Knidos, is located in the center of the Dionysus Terrace where public and social life is active. The church, which was built on the foundations of the temple, is protected by a floor plan with only three naves. In the light of past researches, the limited excavation works made it difficult to classify the existing architectural fragments. The reused blocks differ in their material and workmanship. For this reason, it is determined that some of the reused building blocks in our inventory belong to the Temple of Dionysus as well as other buildings within the city. Some of these reused materials are placed on the church now while the others are exhibited in the grid in the south of the church.During the evaluation phase, as these materials were mostly destroyed due to the second use, they were mostly evaluated in terms of their architectural dimensions as well as their decoration workmanship. They have been compared within themselves as well as with the close examples found among the ancient city structures both inside and outside Anatolia. Accordingly, the reused materials used in Church C include building blocks covering a wide period of time between the Hellenistic and Late Roman Periods. The historical importance of the city is once again understood thanks to the pieces that can shed light on the political and economic history of Knidos among the materials consisting of architectural pieces covering the Roman Period in general.
