Abstract

The main objective of this study is to question the neutrality of the concept ofpower. To realize this objective, written material on the subject has been examinedand the research has been supported by an enquiry on woman and power. Whenanalyzed within the framework of women studies, it?s observed that the concept ofpower, just as many other concepts, has been highly influenced by the socialstructure in which it has appeared. In the light of various researches, it?s possible tostate that throughout the history, power has been monopolized by men. This situationhas also affected the process of conceptualization of power. Woman?s description as?other? and her being the ?object? of the philosophical thinking rather than being its?subject?, has caused her to be isolated from power in the conceptual context. So, asthe results of the enquiry realized during the research indicate, the concept of powerhas been identified by masculine characteristics. The masculine structure of power, constituting a huge obstacle between women and power, has also situated womenwho tend to be in power in a vicious circle. However, as emphasized in the last partof this study, today the concept of power is being questioned frequently since theactual structures of power has caused many problems threatening humanity.Analyses of the concept of power within the framework of women studiescontributes a lot to this questioning as it opens the gates for a wider concept ofpower including both man and woman.
