Since the declaration of the Republic, it has been tried to establish a society havingspecific cultural norms within the framework of this policy. However, it is hard to statethat the Turkish society which contains many different segments is a homogenousstructure. Differentiations are basically geographic, demographic or are shaped aroundthe habitat of any person within the society which effects the formation of his thoughtsand feelings. In this context, it is possible to specify that the cultural perceptions againstthe heterogenous structure of the Turkish society is a direct determinant. On the otherhand, inevitably the existance of different perceptions within the society has created acultural conflict zone.Within the historical period, it can not be stated that the extent variability among thedifferent segments has given rise to cultural conflicts within the structure of the Turkishsociety, however 'Tanzimat' was a turning point. The 'Tanzimat is the beginning of thedisintegration of the Turkish society since as a result of the framework of the policies ofthis period, a westernized group was being formed. At the same time, all the innovationsthat were made was not accepted by the changing perception of the world and aconservative group surrounded by religous doctrine still existed. As a result of themodernization process of the Ottomans, the conflict between the moderns and theconversatives has become the main factor of cultural conflict atmosphere. As of the beginning of the modern-conservative conflict, it can be stated that a problemthat could never be solved by the Ottomans was inherited by the Republic. The conflictbetween the different perceptions of the world continued on the same basis howeverwith different reasons during the Republic period.Especially, the revolutions of Atatürk still continue to put an impact on today'sexisisting social polarization and even carrying it to different dimensions. Altough therevolutions of Atatürk were adopted by those who are secular and have progressivesocial perception however this was not possible by those that had taken over theconservative thought of the collapsed Ottomans. Even today under the reason ofseparation of identities such as ' Kemalist, Nationalist, Ottoman grandson, Abdulhamid viifans and nationalist having high respect for holy things' still continues to lie is the factof cultural conflicts.Even this conflict does not only continue but is drawn strongly topolitical sphere. Mainly, the positions taken, the statements that had been used and theelectioneering propaganda that had been done since the 1950 multi-party elections formthe basis of the history of the conflict. Currently, the importance of cultural polarizationis increasing and reproduced by the parties in the political debate. The modern-conservative conflict seems more clearly at the people's projection of thechoise in the elections.1950-1965-1973-1983-1995 elections were important breakuppoints and it is said that this conflict has played a determining role during the recentelections. For this work emphasises the interest of the elections that made turning pointswithin Turkey at which the modern-conservative voters covered a very important place. The emerging picture of the conflict between the modern-conservative groups, suggestthat it is very important to assess the impact of the voter behavior.Key Words: Modern, Conservative, Elections, Westernization, Conflict.
