This study was conducted to analysis of changes the mental models of secondary school students in terms of their scientific value with 311students at the 7th grade in A,B,C, schools in the province of central Kastamonu throughout 2014 -2015 academic year. The schools were selected according to their ranks at the TEOG examination. In this study, mixed method was employed where both quantitative and qualitative research methods were used. While qualitative section is survey method, quantitative section is pre-experimental design with one group pre-test and post-test. A data collection tool made up of three different sections was used. The tool was used twice as before and after the value was taught. The students' personal identifications, forming a metaphor and a drawing or a caricature were demanded. The mental models of students were split into as; scientific, semi-scientific and non-scientific. Consequently, there was a considerable increase in the scientific mental models in the post test rather than pre test of the students studying A and C schools regarding school variables, but there was a significant decrease in the non-scientific mental models. In school B there was almost no change in the scientific mental models; however, non-scientific mental models diminished. According to gender variable, there was a rise in the post test of boy and girl students. While scientific mental models of girl students were high, the change was eminent for boy students. This study is paramount for being the primary thesis in this area in Turkey. Bu çalışma ortaokul öğrencilerinin bilimsellik değerine ilişkin zihinsel modellerindeki değişimi belirlemek amacıyla, 2014-2015 öğretim yılında Kastamonu il merkezinde yer alan A,B,C okullarının 7. sınıflarında öğrenim gören 311 öğrenci ile gerçekleştirilmiştir. Okullar TEOG sınavında ortaya çıkan başarı sıralaması sonucu oluşturulan gruplara göre seçilmiştir.Bu çalışmada hem nitel hem de nicel araştırma yöntemlerinin birlikte ele alındığı karma yöntem kullanılmıştır. Çalışmanın nitel kısmı tarama modeli, nicel kısmı zayıf deneysel desenlerden tek grup ön test- son test desen modelidir.Öğrencilerin bilimsellik değerine ilişkin zihinsel modellerini tespit etmek amacıyla üç kısımdan oluşan veri toplama aracı değer öğretilmeden önce ve değer öğretildikten sonra olmak üzere iki kez kullanılmıştır. Öğrencilerden birinci kısımda kişisel bilgileri, ikinci kısımda bilimsellik değerine ilişkin metafor oluşturmaları, üçüncü kısımda bilimsellik değerine ilişkin resim ya da karikatür çizmeleri istenmiştir. Metafor ve çizimlerin analizi sonucunda öğrencilerin zihinsel modelleri bilimsel olan, yarı bilimsel olan ve bilimsel olmayan modeller şeklinde gruplara ayrılmıştır.Araştırmanın sonucunda; Okul değişkenine göre A ve C okulunda öğrenim gören öğrencilerin bilimsel zihinsel modellerinde son testte ön teste göre belirgin bir artış, bilimsel olmayan zihinsel modellerinde de belirgin bir düşüş görülmüştür. B okulundaki öğrencilerin oluşturduğu bilimsel zihinsel modellerde ise hemen hemen hiç değişim yaşanmazken, bilimsel olmayan zihinsel modelleri azalmıştır. Cinsiyet değişkenine göre kız ve erkek öğrencilerin bilimsel zihinsel modellerinin son testte ön teste göre arttığı, kız öğrencilerin bilimsel zihinsel modellerinin daha yüksek olduğu ancak erkek öğrencilerdeki değişimin daha fazla olduğu görülmüştür.Bu çalışma sosyal bilgiler eğitimi alanında zihinsel model konusunda yapılmış Türkiye'deki ilk tez çalışması olması açısından önemlidir.
