vAN INTELLIGENT TUTORING SYSTEM FOR TEACHING MICROSOFT EXCEL(M. Sc. Thesis)Sinan KAYAGAZI UNIVERSITYINSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGYDecember 2005ABSTRACTWithin the scope of computer literacy, Microsoft Excel spreadsheet software isamong the most taught packaged softwares. However, there are a lot of problemsencountered while teaching this packaged software covering the subject mattersthat include the use of formulas and functions requiring mathematical operation. For the educators, it is a problem to teach the students the concepts concerningthese subject matters which require the aptitude of mathematical and logicalthinking, by using traditional teaching methods. In seeking solutions to theseproblems, the purpose of this thesis is, by utilizing from the expert systemtechniques, to develop an Intelligent Tutoring System which include the topics seenas the most difficult while teaching and learning Microsoft Excel software. In thescope of this study, to achieve the teaching of using cell address, operators, formulaand function in Microsoft Excel software, an Intelligent Tutoring System isdeveloped which is called ExcelTUTOR. The developed ExcelTUTOR software, incontrast to the disadvantages of computer assisted instruction, gives individualizedimmediate feedback, arbitrary hints and explanations.viIt has a structure that gives the student the possibility of learning within his speedlimit, making exercise and repetition and gives the opportunity of makingevaluation and suggestions about the students? performances to the students andteachers.Science Code : 702.3.006Key Words : Intelligent Tutoring System, Teaching Microsoft Excel,Computer Assisted Instruction, Expert SystemsPage Number : 119Adviser : Assist.
