The purpose of the current study was to investigate the effect of animation-based activities in teaching the structure of atoms on seventh grade students' conceptual learning and attitudes. The research was conducted with 62 students in a state secondary school, Bursa on the fall semester of 2017-2018 academic year. In the control, while the lessons based on the current program were taught by the researcher, in the experiment one, the lessons based on the current program were taught with the animation-based activities designed by the researcher. Animations were designed with the Powtoon program on the topic of `Particulate Structure of Matter/ Atom and Structure`. A mixed research methodology including quantitative and qualitative research methods was adopted in the study. Atomic Structure Achievement Test (AYİBT), The Structure of Atoms Evaluation Questions (AYDS), face-to-face semi-structured interviews, worksheets, Animation Opinion Scale (AGS) were used as data collection tools. The result of the study indicated that there was no statistically significant difference between students' test scores in both groups. However, findings from worksheets, open-ended evaluation questions and interviews indicated that students in the experimental group tended to have more scientific explanations and focused on more dynamic nature of particles of atoms. Data from the Animation Opinion Scale indicated that students in the experimental group have positive attitudes towards using animations. Bu araştırmanın amacı atomun yapısının öğretiminde animasyon destekli etkinliklerin yedinci sınıf öğrencilerinin kavramsal öğrenmelerine ve tutumlarına etkisini araştırmaktır. Bu araştırma, Bursa ilindeki bir devlet ortaokulunda 2017–2018 eğitim-öğretim yılı güz yarıyılında yedinci sınıfta öğrenim gören 62 öğrenci ile yapılmıştır. Kontrol grubunda mevcut müfredata göre dersler araştırmacı tarafından işlenirken, deney grubunda mevcut müfredatta kullanılan metotlara ek olarak araştırmacı tarafından hazırlanan animasyonların kullanıldığı etkinliklerle dersler işlenmiştir. Kullanılan animasyonlar, `Maddenin Tanecikli Yapısı/Atomun Yapısı` konusunu öğretmek için, Powtoon programıyla hazırlanmıştır. Nicel ve nitel verilerin birlikte toplandığı karma yöntem araştırması uygulanmış ve veri toplama araçları olarak Atomun Yapısı ile İlgili Başarı Testi (AYİBT), Atomun Yapısı Değerlendirme Soruları (AYDS), yüz yüze yarı yapılandırılmış görüşmeler, çalışma kâğıtları ve Animasyon Görüş Ölçeği (AGÖ) kullanılmıştır. Çalışmanın sonucunda, her iki gruptaki öğrencilerin atomun yapısı ile ilgili başarı testi sonuçları arasında istatiksel olarak anlamlı fark olmadığı tespit edilmiştir. Ancak, çalışma kâğıtları, değerlendirme soruları ve yarı yapılandırılmış görüşmelerin analizleri sonucunda, animasyona dayalı etkinliklerin kullanıldığı deney grubundaki öğrencilerin daha bilimsel açıklamalar geliştirdikleri ve parçacıkların hareketlerine daha fazla vurgu yaptıkları tespit edilmiştir. Animasyon Görüş Ölçeği'nden ve görüşmeden elde edilen sonuçlara göre ise animasyona dayalı etkinliklerin kullanıldığı deney grubundaki öğrencilerin animasyon kullanımına karşı olumlu tutuma sahip oldukları bulunmuştur.
