Abstract:

In the Ottoman world of thought and art, the relationship between poetry and the city is multidimensional. One dimension developed through the perception of space in the classical period. Space acquire connotation in the cultural context and place beyond its physical meaning; therefore, space is the key concept, determining the semantic codes and shaping the frame of the particular culture. Space, which takes its semantic dimensions from the cosmological view of the culture and civilization to which it belongs, is a crucial determiner of all art designs. Its relationship with existence and being combines with the imagination of the artist, and this process gives birth to the work of art. Space is the name of the ground on which the act of thinking and artistic creation takes place. Ottoman thought took its perception of space from the Islamic culture to which it belongs. Accordingly, space is perceived through lens, previously acquired by individual’s knowledge and culture. This lens, like a kaleidoscope, reflects the light with its colorful dimensions, with the diversity revealed by the stylistic differences of the artists. In the meantime, the source of this light is a form of reception in which a collective consciousness dominates and where the individual or the subject is not left with the opportunity for their deductions. Classical Ottoman city is not shaped around a central plan because it does not leave the space completely to the dominance of human will. The city grows in a natural flow. There is no understanding of “empty space”, so, there is no permission for people to damage the topography by entitling themselves dominators of the space. In classical Turkish poetry, there is a theoretical corporation with the city and architecture in terms of design and aesthetics, and also poems are important sources that reflect the entire dynamic of the city with textual testimonies. In the study, the history of the city in the Ottoman imagination and the philosophical background of the concept of the city were examined. After the theoretical framework of the concept of the city was determined, examples of poetry were given about the poets' perception of the city in classical Turkish poetry and the dimensions of the city reflected in life as a border and possibility.
