Abstract:

The 1904-1905 Russo-Japanese War attracted significant attention in the Ottoman military press, where its military, strategic, and logistical aspects were examined in detail. For the Ottoman army, this war was considered an example in which modern warfare techniques were tested and important lessons were derived. The Ottoman military press highlighted the disciplined and well-trained Japanese army, its strong morale, and its modern warfare strategies while emphasizing that the Russian army suffered defeat due to lack of discipline, leadership deficiencies, and logistical failures. The fact that the Japanese military prepared its soldiers physically and mentally for war from an early age, effectively utilized modern weaponry, and placed great emphasis on strategic planning was closely analyzed by Ottoman military circles. In this context, the Ottoman military press thoroughly examined Japans military system, educational policies, and warfare tactics, arguing that the Ottoman army should undergo a similar modernization process. Reflections of the war in the Ottoman military press extensively covered the importance of firepower, the use of machine guns, reconnaissance anintelligence in warfare strategies, logistical support systems, and military training processes. The effective use of modern artillery systems, machine guns, and torpedo boats by the Japanese was also evaluated as an example of the Ottoman navy. In the context of naval warfare, the Japanese navys victories against the Russian fleet underscored the necessity of modernizing the Ottoman navy. It was emphasized that while the Japanese trained their soldiers through both technical and moral preparation, the Russian army suffered from a lack of morale and leadership failures, which weakened its combat capability.
