Abstract:

Abstract The notion of “border” represents both a real and an imaginary limit; a threshold between inside and outside. Spatially, it is a physical line that separates the public sphere from the private one. Imaginarily, it becomes invisible and pertains to everything that is social and cultural. In literature, the concept of “border” seems to haunt above all the feminine imagination, particularly that of Francophone women writers, and more specifically Moroccan authors such as the writer and sociologist Fatema Mernissi. In her novel Dreams of Trespass: Tales of a Harem Girlhood, we focus on this notion of “border” as both spatial and symbolic. We also show how this novel, together with her historical work Forgotten Queens of Islam, highlights the dangerous nature of this concept which, in the author’s view, constitutes a major obstacle to women’s emancipation. Keywords: border, harem, public/private space, freedom, liberation, speech, liberating voice, women’s literature, feminism.
