Abstract:

The research deals with the study of consciousness - its concept, ways of its formation, its absence, and the reaching the stage of unconsciousness - according to the Orientalist Gustave Le Bon, in his book The Psychology of the Crowds. The research reviewed the concept of consciousness both linguistically and idiomatically and concluded that defining an idiomatic concept of consciousness is not easy. The first section of the research deals with how consciousness is formed, whether based on embracing basic ideas such as beliefs and theories or based on emergent ideas. This section also deals with how it is possible to influence the imagination of the masses, whose consciousness can be easily formed. The section also explains how religious emotion has a prominent role in the formation of the consciousness of the masses. The section concluded that there are two types of factors that affect the formation of consciousness according to Le Bon. The first type is deep and rooted factors, while the second is direct factors. The second section deals with the absence of consciousness, its causes, and forms according to Le Bon. The section attributed the reasons for the absence of consciousness of the masses to causes such as assembly, method of learning, repetition, and fear. As for the forms of the absence of consciousness, they include elections, parliaments, fraud, and control over people’s destinies, in addition to the absence of awareness in beliefs, both superficial and deeply rooted. The third section is dedicated to discussing the unconsciousness stage. It shows how it is formed and what are the stages of its formation since the beginning of the individual's entry into society and then the gradual dissolution of borders with that society. The research attributed this to what the individual feels of strength when he is part of a large community in addition to the effect of mental infection that affects individuals in the same society, and sometimes the effect of incitement infection, which is the most dangerous at all. The research indicated that the unconsciousness stage is original, not newly emerging. The research concluded with the effects of unconsciousness, and that it leads to terrorism and destruction, in addition to falsifying the imagination of the masses, then they become more like a sleeper who sees images and believes them.
