Abstract:

Shahnameh of Ferdowsi is an instance of a national epic containing the culture, values, myths, people, rulers, battles and the stories on the heroism of a nation. Thereby, a significant element in this work is the concept of a homeland that encompasses the identity of a nation. The homeland in Shahnameh is a place where the story of a nation is formed, and the feeling of adherence to and loving this homeland have penetrated to its soul as a great value so that patriotism makes the most prominent characteristics of this work.
Among other emotional features of Shahnameh, patriotism has ever acted as the focus [of the studies on this work], and in the meanwhile, it has also been disputed. Patriotism works as a natural and valuable attribute in the appropriate context; however, if it is overstated, it is destructive and immoral. As a result, the proper elaboration of the patriotism as involved in Shahnameh is of high significance. The provision of a full image of the patriotism concept dealt with by Shahnameh, together with the delineation of its limits and framework is thus essential.
The present study initially seeks to reach a general description of the concept of the homeland, an essential notion in Shahnameh, and an interpretation of it that is closer to its reality. Accordingly, the concept of homeland is examined not in terms of geography or political boundaries, but in terms of its essence and the characteristics attributed to it from the Shahnameh perspective. Then, the approach to patriotism as a value is dealt with through the clarification of patriotism as the love for the homeland, i.e. as it is manifested in Shahnameh. Finally, some exaggerating views and attributes existing in this regard will be explored.
