Abstract:

In societies where patriarchy is strong, child care and responsibility are distributed unequally between parents. The glorified fiction of motherhood, which comes to the fore within the marriage contract, expands to include fatherhood after divorce. The widespread belief that motherhood is instinctive, biological and universal isolates mothering in child care and responsibility. In this context, mothering experiences should be critically evaluated in social work practices. This research on the experience of mothering is important for the development of social work practices needed in lone mothering. This study aims to explore how women experience lone mothering and what kind of experiences construct lone mothering practices. In the study, which was designed according to the phenomenology design, one of the qualitative research methods, the subjects were reached through purposive sampling. Fieldwork was completed with 18 participants using a semi-structured interview form. The research data were coded thematically in MAXQDA 2022 program and analyzed by content analysis method. According to the results of the research, the position of mothering imposes limitations on social and economic relations in lone mothering. While lone mothering means emancipation and empowerment for women, it also means struggling against the dominant ideology of motherhood. When womens economic, social and psychological needs are evaluated in a holistic manner, it is seen that there is a need to develop feminist social work practices.
