Abstract:

 Abstract The study aimed at identifying the levels of critical thinking skills among the students of scientific departments of level four at the Faculty of Education and Applied Sciences- Hajjah city. The sample of the study included 111 female and male pre-service teachers of the scientific departments of Chemistry, Physics, and Biology in the Faculty of education in Hajjah city. The researchers used Watson Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal to assess critical thinking skills which are: to come to conclusions, to recognize assumptions, to make deductions, to interpret, and to evaluate arguments. The test was translated into Arabic by Abdulhamid Jaber and Yahya Hndam and adapted to the Yemeni environment by Sarah Alhammadi (2002).   The findings were as follows: There is no statistically significant difference in the mean scores of pre-service teachers in the extent of availability of the skills of making conclusions and deductions that can be attributed to gender. The study also found that there is a statistically significant difference in the extent of availability of the skills of recognizing assumptions and interpretation in addition to the test of critical thinking as whole in favor of female pre-service teachers regarding interpretation and in favor of the male pre-service teachers regarding recognizing assumptions.  Furthermore,  there was no statistically significant difference in the skills of making conclusions, deduction and evaluating arguments that can be attributed to specialty; (Chemistry, Physics, and Life Sciences) however, there was a statistically significant difference in the skill of recognizing assumptions in favor of the department of Physics, in the skill of interpretation in favor of the department of Biology, and in the test of critical thinking as whole  in favor of the departments of Physics and Biology. Results also revealed that critical thinking skills are weak among the pre-service teachers of Scientific departments.
