Abstract:

Abū Isḥāq al-Isfarāyīnī, one of the most important scholars gifted by the Ashʿariyya theology to the history of Islamic thought and nicknamed al-Ustad within his sect, despite this position, stood close to the views of other theological schools on some issues or was the addressee of such an accusation. Probably the most famous of these has been the allegations that he denied the karamah. Although some of the authors of the sect to which he belonged also defended this idea, he was transformed into a person who was identified with the denial of the karamah within the Ahl al-Sunnah. Since his works in which he expressed his opinion on the subject have not survived to the present day, it has become necessary to refer to works that attribute this understanding to him or that present the issue in a different way. The fact that some of these works directly quote passages from his writings has clarified the issue to some extent. However, it was not possible to conclude all the discussions as the relevant expressions are open to different interpretations. Indeed, some have argued that he rejected it in absolute terms, while others have argued that he only allocated it. Obviously, these differences of opinion will always persist.
