Abstract:

This paper highlights contemporary Syrian theatre through three plays written by ’Abdul Fattah Rawwas Qal’a Ji (b1938). He is a prolific playwright, poet and essayist. He highly values the significance of theatre in the life of nations. The playwright s demonstration of humanistic and social pains is tended to trigger self-confrontation and insinuate audiences to endorse their legibility for a peaceful life. The aim in this research is to trace Qal’a Ji’s treatment of the concept of survival in A Redundant Child (2001), On the Sidewalk (2014) and The Great Grandfather (2015) shedding light on experimental techniques underlying physicality and authentication. The study of specific features in Syrian theatre explores those various attempts of survival under suppression, war and terrorism. Seeking salvation is a human demand in the years of siege, displacement and economic shortage. While connecting with the glorious past, the hopeful future has never been absent in Qal’a Ji’s plays.
