Abstract:

The inhabitants of the local communities in the Middle Inaouen Basin rely primarily on agricultural activity as their main economic resource. Rainfed agriculture dominates the cultivable land in the region, while irrigated areas remain spatially limited. This makes agricultural activity in the Middle Inaouen Basin highly dependent on climate variability, with agricultural production directly affected by annual and seasonal fluctuations in rainfall. Agricultural production in the Middle Inaouen Basin has shown significant variability from one year to another, depending on the amount of rainfall. The 2009/2010 agricultural season recorded the highest levels of production in the region’s local communities, coinciding with the highest recorded rainfall of 1125 mm. In contrast, the 2015/2016 season witnessed the lowest production levels across all communities, due to weak rainfall during that year, which averaged only 245 mm at the studied stations. Additionally, the seasonal distribution of rainfall throughout the year had a notable impact. To address this issue, we aim to analyze the spatial and temporal characteristics of climate variability and study the relationship between the evolution of agricultural production and both interannual and seasonal fluctuations in rainfall, using a statistical approach.
