Abstract:

Although the number of children in employment has a tendency to decline in recent years child labour still remains a global issue. The use of child labour is a multifaceted phenomenon, however, its effects on health have always been at the forefront. It is a commonly accepted view that performing heavy works negatively affects the health and development of the children, but there is no consensus with regard to the effects of working in “light” duty jobs on children’s health. Some researchers, particularly in recent years, suggest more frequently that working in “light” duty jobs might affect the physical and mental health of the children positively. The aim of this study is to assess in the light of literature how working conditions affect physical health of the children started working at early ages, on a sectoral basis. The studies on this issue reveal that the health of the children employed in hundreds of different branches of agriculture, industry and service sector is threatened by various unfavourable conditions of the work environment. This can most clearly be seen through the data on physical growth of the children, which is the most important indicator of general health status. The findings about various fields of work show that working in “light” duty jobs also affects the children’s health negatively. It is concluded that child labour is a phenomenon that must be eradicated immediately.
