Abstract:

Abstract ABSTRACTTo our knowledge today, there are four Turkish surgical monographs accepted to be from the fifteenth century. The first of these is Cerrâhiyetü’l-hâniye. It is followed by Alâ’im-i cerrâhîn, Cerrahnâme and Terceme-i hülâsa fi fenni’l-cirâhe. These four surgical monographs are basically collected works from the works of Greek physicians translated to Arabic and the books of famous physicians and surgeons of the Islamic world. Some also include quotations from Ottoman physicians.Cerrahnâme, Alâ’im-i cerrâhîn and The Translation of Hulâsa contain simple practical information since they were written on the purpose to be useful to people in the absence of a physician. And Cerrâhiyetü’l-hâniye is detailed and didactic because it is for those willing to learn the science of surgery. These surgery books consist of similar issues in accord with the then understanding of surgery. Furthermore, some chapters in one identically appear in another. Only those chapters in Alâ’im-i cerrâhîn concerning syphilis and firearm injuries are not found in the others. While pictures and miniatures of patients, physician-surgeons, and surgical techniques and equipments are presented in Cerrâhiyetü’l-hâniye, the other books are non-pictorial.The impression taken after a simple comparison of these books is that Alâ’im-i cerrâhîn, Cerrahnâme and Hulâsa bear a similarity in terms of the surgical methods. The cauterization technique occasionally used in these three books is given particular importance in Cerrâhiyetü’l-hâniye and provided a separate section. It is possible to state that the first three books have the characteristics of a handbook. As for Cerrâhiyetü’l-hâniye, although it is based on Zehravî’s work, Şerefeddin Sabuncuoğlu also describes his experiences in his this book and gives the anesthetic compound which he used in surgical attempts. There is no information on anesthesia in the other books. Cerrâhiyetü’l-hâniye with its miniatures, illustrations of surgical equipment, surgical techniques and disease definitions remarkably shines amongst others.A detailed comparison on the Turkish surgery books written in the 15th century would, of course, provide more satisfactory information. Keywords: Fifteenth century; Turkish surgery books.

Bugünkü bilgilerimize göre, On beşinci yüzyıla ait olduğu kabul edilen dört Türkçe cerrahi monografi vardır. Bunların ilki Cerrâhiyetü’l-hâniye’dir. Onu Alâ’im-i cerrâhîn, Cerrahnâme, Terceme-i hulâsa fi fenni’l-cirâhe izler. Sadece Alâ’im-i cerrâhîn’deki ateşli silah yaraları ve frengi bölümleri diğerlerinde yoktur. Anahtar Kelimeler: On beşinci yüzyıl; Türkçe cerrahname.
