Abstract:

Urban green spaces play a vital role in promoting public health, enhancing sustainability, and strengthening environmental resilience. However, numerous studies have identified persistent shortcomings in urban green space planning, particularly in the context of rapid urban population growth. This study investigates the integration of green spaces within the processes of urban expansion by developing an evaluative framework grounded in Algerian environmental protection legislation and the principles of biophilic urbanism. The framework assesses six dimensions: the neighborhood, its immediate surroundings, the biotic environment, the physical environment, the built environment, and the social environment. Employing a hybrid descriptive-quantitative methodology, the study underscores the dual imperative of preserving natural landscapes and systematically integrating green spaces into urban planning. Five planned residential neighborhoods in the city of Tiaret, characterized by surrounding cropland and forest, serve as case studies. The findings indicate a failure to adequately protect natural land and mitigate environmental hazards. Green space integration is weak, with green area ratios ranging between 5% and 10% in four of the five neighborhoods. Furthermore, a lack of diversity in green space typologies and the absence of key biophilic urbanism strategies reflect the consequences of a uniform and rigid design approach adopted by urban planners.
