Abstract:

Since the omens of the First World War began to appear, the conflicting parties
in it have realized the importance of Islam and the Islamic figures that represent it, in the possibility of tipping the balance of power in their favour, so they pursued every focused propaganda policy that sought to tighten its grip on this strategic field and employ it for their benefit.
The Ottoman Empire, a major party in the conflict alongside Germany, based its propaganda on its religious and historical legitimacy in the Sunni Islamic countries, by virtue of the centralization of its position in the Islamic world through the institution of the Caliphate, which, according to it, entitles it to protect
all the subjugated lands that were part of its possessions in stages.
On the other hand, the colonial countries such as France and Britain were preparing for a fateful battle in this field. They tried to legitimize their military and political claims and objectives by using a suspicious religious discourse tainted with shortcomings and contradictions, by using their influence on many religious figures of influence and weight, whether enlightened scholars or traditional sheikhs.
