Abstract:

The present study investigates the making of a verse riddle in classical Arabic sources of literature. It revisits the riddle as a realization of intended ambiguity. This function has been disregarded in the Arabic literary studies. The study contributes to the following issues: (1)	redefinening the key term "lughz\ (2)	suggesting a new classification of the riddles which is different from the classical one. (3)	demonstrating the linguistic and rhetoric manifestations of the process of making a verse riddle. A considerable attention is paid to the cognitive aspects of making and solving a riddle. To sum up. the main object of the study is to reconsider the verse riddle as a literary genre of great importance to linguistics and cognitive sciences, not merely a mean used for fun and entertainment \
