Abstract:

Madrasahs are important science centers where the Islamic science tradition was formed. During the Mamluk period 648-9231250-1517, one of the largest Muslim Turkish states of the Middle Ages, many madrasahs were built as a continuation of this tradition. This situation, which can be considered as a reflection of the importance given to science and scholars by Mamluk sultans and statesmen, has led to the Mamluk period being described as one of the brightest periods in Islamic history in terms of science and culture. One of the government officials who contributed to this scientific vitality during the Mamluk period with the madrasa he built was Sayf al-Dīn Nāṣirī, who is known as Amīr Sarghatmish d. 7591358. In this study, the Madrasa of Sarghatmishiyya, which was built by Amīr Sarghatmish in Cairo in 7571356 and is one of the famous madrasahs of the Mamluk period, is discussed. In this madrasa, which was established to provide education on Hanafi fiqh, many leading scholars of the period gave lessons and collected science in Sarghatmishiyya to many students. So much so that some of these students also played an important role in the spread of the Hanafi sect in Anatolia. Therefore, this madrasa draws attention both with its establishment by a Mamluk amīr to provide education on the Hanafi sect and with the activities of its students in Anatolia. In this context, in the study, firstly, information about the Mamluk madrasahs was given in outline, in the first part, the general characteristics of the madrasah were emphasized, including its establishment and physical structure, and in the second part, the education and training activities in the madrasah were included. No specific study could be identified in the national and international literature about this madrasah, which is mentioned together with famous scholars of the period such as Ibn Khaldūn in various academic studies. Therefore, our primary goal is to contribute to the recognition of the Madrasa of Sarghatmishiyya, one of the important educational institutions of the period. It is also among the objectives of the study to make determinations about the educational activities of this period through the scholars working in the madrasah and the courses taught.
