Abstract:

When human history is examined, it can be observed that various entertainment activities take place in all organized human societies, from primitive tribes to large empires, although their nature varies. In the Ottoman Empire, entertainments lasting for days were organized for various reasons; while the state provided entertainment for he masses on this occasion, it also used it as an opportunity to display its greatness an power. These types of entertainments were generally organized in Istanbul, the capital of the Ottoman Empire, and many performing groups, including jugglers and acrobats, were assigned to entertain the people who came to watch by displaying their skills. In addition to such large organizations, the study focused on jugglers and acrobats who practice their profession by organizing shows for limited public audiences in smaller venues. Details of the shows organized by jugglers and acrobats, who were important elements of Ottoman entertainment life, were examined; it has been understood that jugglers, in particular, have become an important part of the circumcision ceremonies held in large mansions, as well as the circumcision ceremonies organized by the state on behalf of children in need. When archive documents related to the subject were examined, it was determined that Istanbul was one of the places frequented by jugglers and acrobats. During the research period, the 19th century and the early 20th century, many jugglers and acrobats from various countries applied to the competent authorities to organize shows in Istanbul. The applications made by both groups were evaluated, the problems they encountered were mentioned, the venues where they could hold demonstrations and other details related to the process were examined.
