Abstract:

The development of the tourism industry is a dynamic process and the attitudes of local people towards tourists play an important role in the tourism development of destinations. The balance between the positive economic impacts of tourism activities and their potential environmental and socio-cultural impacts can be shaped by the attitudes and participation of local people. Therefore, the attitudes and behaviors of local people towards tourists can directly affect the success of tourism. Therefore, it is essential for future tourism planning that local people are actively involved in the tourism development process and their views are sought. This study aims to reveal the attitudes of local people living in Cumalıkızık towards tourists. Phenomenology design was adopted as a qualitative research method in the study. In the study, interview technique was used as a data collection technique through a semi-structured form. Within this framework, face-to-face interviews were conducted with 12 people living in Cumalıkızık village. The interviews were audio recorded with the permission of the participants. The audio recordings were then transcribed for content analysis and checked by each researcher. In the next stage, the data obtained were subjected to content analysis. The data obtained were coded by creating themes under two categories. According to the research findings, local people generally have a positive attitude towards tourism activities and tourists. Among the positive effects of tourism, economics is the most prominent, while environmental pollution and cultural degeneration are the most prominent negative effects.
