Abstract:

This study evaluates the forage and grain yield performance of twenty barley genotypes under field conditions, focusing on their suitability for dual-purpose use (forage and grain production). Most genotypes (84%) exhibited good vegetative growth. Significant differences (P<0.001) in grain yield and (P<0.01) in biomass were observed among the genotypes, with average yields of 7.95 tons/ha for biomass and 1.18 tons/ha for grain. Based on these yields, accessions were categorized into four groups: grain production, biomass production, dual-purpose, and non-forage interest. Early forage production at the tillering stage yielded 0.91 tons/ha in 2022-23 and 0.88 tons/ha in 2023-24, showing no significant year-to-year variation. Grain yield was minimally affected by early forage removal, with a slight yield loss of 1-3%. The cutting at full flowering yielded 6.78 tons of dry matter/ha over two years, with genotype G12 producing the highest forage yield. The study highlights the potential of barley for dual-purpose use, producing additional forage without compromising subsequent grain yield, thus offering a sustainable model for livestock feed during critical forage shortages.
