Abstract:

Yusuf Bahri of Vezirköprü, who is a polymath and fastidious Ottoman scholar, after completing his education in Amasya and Istanbul, returned to his homeland Vezirköprü where he taught and preached for a couple of years. Afterwards, he traveled to Egypt where he for six years attended the scholarly sessions of al-Zabidi (d. 1205/1790) from whom he also obtained many ijazas. Then he went back to his homeland as a great scholar well-versed especially in such Islamic sciences as Hadith, Islamic Law and Sufism. His work entitled Atau’l-Qadir al-Fayyaz, an unfinished commentary on the first chapter of Shifa by Qadi Iyaz (d. 544/1149) is a sufficient evidence testifiying to his high position in the Islamic sciences. After returning from Egypt, he was appointed as professor in the Fayziyya Madrasa in Çorum and was put in charge of the supervising the library therein. So he spent over forty years in the scholarly life and activities in Çorum. In addition, we should point out that the copies of the manuscripts scribed by him are quite valuable because his handwriting is pretty nice and legible. Almost all the copies of the books that were copied by him in different Islamic disciplines are in the Çorum Hasan Pasha Library.
