Abstract:

In this study, one of the pioneers of the XVIth century’s Reformation in Europe and the founder of the Protestant Churches, Martin Luther’s assessment of Islam and the Turks are investigated with the questions of main themes and theses that came to the fore. The article also questioned whether Luther's assessment of Islam and Turks are differentiated with the hypotheses in Medieval Europe that he criticized and if so, the reasons behind the differentness.A detailed examination was carried out via five main themes based on the related works written by Luther on Islam and the Turks. These themes are coded as: (I) The Turks as the Wrath of the God, (II) Turks as Papist (III) the Turks that must be fought as Enemy, (IV) Turks the Cruel and Lustful (V) and finally ‘Worth-boasting’ Turks. It was observed that Luther used an exclusionary, judgmental and reactive language on Islam and Turks; Luther’s assessment are in compliance with the theses that constructed by Christians in Medieval Europe with the exception of picturing Turks as Papist and his opposite attitudes against the Crusades. At the end it was concluded that Luther is highly affected by his own theological-political position and the political developments of his period, too. Through examining one of the Europe's historical codes, the article aims to contribute to the contemporary discussions on Islam and the West.
