 The article analyses the life and works of the famous historian and statesman of Azerbaijan, academician Yakup Mahmudov. The activities of the famous historian are multifaceted. In this article, we tried to give more space to the activities of the scientist directly related to Baku State University. For many years he served as the head of the department and dean of the Faculty of History of Baku State University, played an important role in both scientific, pedagogical and social life of the university. The article draws a parallel between the university where he graduated and later worked and the scientist who devoted 67 years to Azerbaijans first institution of higher education. The aim of the article is to analyse the life path, scientific-pedagogical and socio-political activities of the famous historian Yakup Mahmudov in the context of the path followed by Baku State University. For this purpose, we conducted a comparative analysis of information about Yakup Mahmudov. Among the sources we used in our research, both the works written about the scientist by his students and other authors, as well as the scientists own researches occupy an important place.

 Məqalə Azərbaycanın görkəmli tarixçisi və dövlət xadimi, akademik Yaqub Mahmudovun həyat və yaradıcılığının tədqiqinə həsr olunub. Görkəmli tarixçinin fəaliyyəti çoxşaxəlidir. Hazırki yazıda alimin bilavasitə Bakı Dövlət Universiteti ilə bağlı fəaliyyətinə daha çox yer ayırmağa çalışmışıq. O, uzun illər Bakı Dövlət Universitetinin Tarix fakültəsinin kafedra müdiri, dekanı vəzifəsində çalışmış, universitetin həm elmi-pedaqoji, həm də ictimai həyatında böyük rol oynamışdır. Məqalədə iki yubilyarın  məzunu olduğu və sonralar çalışdığı Universitetlə ömrünün 67 ilini Azərbaycanın ilk Ali təhsil ocağına həsr etmiş alim arasında paralel aparılır. Məqalənin məqsədi görkəmli tarixçi Yaqub Mahmudovun həyat yolunu, elmi-pedaqoji və ictimai-siyasi fəaliyyətini Bakı Dövlət Universitetinin keçdiyi yolla əlaqəli şəkildə araşdırmaqdır. Bu məqsədlə biz Yaqub Mahmudov haqqında olan məlumatların müqayisəli təhlilini aparmışıq. Tədqiqatımızın aparılması üçün istifadə etdiyimiz qaynaqlar sırasında həm alim haqqında onun yetirmələri və digər müəlliflərin yazdığı əsərlər, həm də alimin özünün tədqiqatları mühüm yer tutur.
