Abstract:

This article provides a general view of the reception of the sixth-century Alexandrian Christian philosopher, John Philoponus, in the Islamic tradition, and highlights the place he occupied in Islamic philosophy and theology. The main concern of this article is to illustrate the main aspects of his reception and show the extent to which Muslim thinkers were acquainted with his work. This article demonstrates that the falāsifa, unlike the authors of catalogs, were well acquainted with Yaḥyā al-Naḥwī’s work and drew directly from his texts. It is certain that the philosophers of the Muslim East, namely al-Farābī and Ibn Sīnā, had direct access to his texts. However, this does not seem to be the case for the falāsifa of the West, like Ibn Bājja and Ibn Rushd. In addition, the mutakallimūn reproduced many of Yaḥyā al-Naḥwī’s ideas and arguments, though his name was rarely mentioned. Therefore, it is not clear whether they had direct access to Philoponus’ texts or not. The article first introduces Yaḥyā al-Naḥwī and his scientific and theological contribution, continues by highlighting some aspects of his influence on kalām, and concludes by shedding light on some aspects of his reception by the falāsifa and the scope of his influence.
