Abstract:

Although there are views that suggest that information and communication technologies will increase environmental pollution, there are also views that argue that developments in information and communication technologies will reduce environmental pollution and increase environmental quality. This study examines the relationship between environmental quality and information and communication technologies through the example of Turkiye. Thus, it is aimed to practically test which view is valid in Turkiye. Ecological footprint was used to represent environmental quality, and the rate of individuals using the internet was used to represent developments in information and communication technologies. Economic growth and energy consumption were added to the model as explanatory variables. The analysis, in which the Augmented Autoregressive Distributed Lag ARDL bounds test is applied, includes annual data 1993-2022. According to the analysis results, the internet usage rate has a positive but insignificant effect on the ecological footprint in the short term. In the long term, the effect of internet use on the ecological footprint is negative and significant. The increase in the rate of internet usage in Turkiye positively affects environmental quality by reducing the ecological footprint. The effect of the economic growth indicator on the ecological footprint is positive in both the short and long term, while the effect of energy consumption is negative and insignificant in the long term.
