Abstract:

This paper reconsiders the emblem of gumqdar or mace bearer during the mamlūk period, which was first discovered by L. A. Mayer in 1937. It examines the mace in its historical and archaeological context as an individual weapon during wars; as a means for releasing cartridges of fire, naphtha, and gunpowder during mamluk ceremonies; as well as being a mamlūk emblem representing a military office in the mamlūk court. It inspects a number of the most important military maces, and represents various figures and illustrations often referred to in mamluk manuscripts and treatise on chivalry or warfare. Moreover, it explores a number of mamluk glazed earthenware and enameled glass with this emblem that had previously been either overlooked, or had been identified as the emblem of trumpet by Mayer & those writing after him. The method followed here has revealed the confusion & error Mayer and those who followed his footsteps fell into. This paper seeks to distinguish between the mace as a mamluk emblem and the trumpet, which is not an emblem at all as had once been believed. The confusion is mainly due to the great similarity between the trumpet and the mamluk maces represented either having a bell-shaped head, a triangular form, or lotus-shaped; all of which have been demonstrated in the illustrations attached.
