Abstract:

Through the 1930’s, the regime eliminated all opponents and completed the radical revolutions to a large extend. Reforms made in all areas also included the legal area. Mahmut Esat Bozkurt, the Minister of Justice, introduced a new legal system as well as many radical reforms in the judiciary organization taking the Western legal system as an example. Within this period, resistance against the reforms came from the opposition whereas in the legal area, these new laws and organizations conducted under the leadership of Mahmut Esat Bozkurt received severe criticism not only from the opposition but also from the daily Cumhuriyet, one of the prominent supporters of the regime, established with the request of and named personally by Atatürk himself and from Yunus Nadi, the editor-in-chief of Cumhuriyet and a member of the parliament from the Republican People’s Party (Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi, CHP). This study is about a particular event called by the press “the Trial of the Journalists” that also included the daily Cumhuriyet, from the point of view of Cumhuriyet and Yunus Nadi, which was one of the major incidents that led to the resignation of Mahmut Esat Bozkurt from the Ministry of Justice, a post he had been serving since 1924, due to harsh criticism he suffered for getting involved in the transfer of this court action.
