Abstract:

Cinema has an important place in the relations of societies with the past. Cinema is one of the tools used for memories belonging to the collective memory to be reminded. The narrative of the past, chosen in line with the needs of the present, is conveyed to todays audience through cinema. The continuity relationship between the past, present and future, framed for a specific purpose, is established with the memories brought to the present. Societies build their identities through this continuity relationship. Forgotten events and stories establish a collective reminder with the visual animation techniques of cinema. In this context, cinema enables to remember with visual and auditory possibilities and to re-establish the memory within the framework of needs. Cinema becomes a means of struggle against forgetting as a reinterpretation of the past. In this context, the aim of the study is; is to explain the mnemonic mission of cinema, one of the most basic tools of mass communication. The scope of the study consists of the movie Ulak, directed by Çağan Irmak and released in 2008. The film will be examined within the scope of the concepts of collective remembering and collective forgetting. Due to the fact that the main narrative of the film is based on fairy tales, the study is limited to the remembering and forgetting features of oral and written culture. In the study, within the framework of the dialectic of remembering and forgetting; The place, time, characters and collective remembrance elements of the film were analyzed and evaluated with descriptive analysis.
