Abstract:

This study discusses Sufism in the post-Almohads era in western Islamic region; it dealt with the concept of Sufism and its development stages, poles and role in the Islamic society in the western Islamic region. This movement began to make its way to the Maghreb from the east for several factors such as scientific and pilgrimage trips and the entrance of Al-Ghazālī’s books iḥyāʾ ʿulūm ad-dīn , After the establishment and expansion of the Almoravid state, Sufism began to grow and developed despite the opposition of jurists and some princes. But under the Almohads’ state and the intellectual freedom clash shown by the sultans of this state that gave attention to the intellectual, philosophical and mystical sides. Moreover, Shu’aib Abû Madyan is considered the pole of Sufism in the Maghreb region as he gave a boost to Sufism and its consolidation among the various classes of the western Islamic region. After the dissolution of the Almohads’ state, this movement sharply spread and expanded, especially during the time of the Zayanids, Merinids, and Andalusians. This movement found great support among the kings and sultans of these countries and, thus, spread in the cities and deserts, and among the public and the individuals. The Sufis gained a social status and became close to the highest authority. This situation continued until the tenth century AH, when it began to decline and its status started to diminish as a result of the intromissions that were introduced to this movement from myths and heresies which lead to the decline of its spiritual and cultural role in the western Islamic society.
