Abstract:

Travel literature offers double-layered stories. A journey narrative is usually based on the element of travelling. Hence, it sheds light on the culture and history of a certain place along with the view of the author. Edith Wharton is regarded as a talented American novelist who could make use of her various trips to depict her fictitious characters travelling on both levels - externally and internally. Her novel The House of Mirth (1905) is a good example. This paper tackles the recurrent journeys of Lily Bart, the protagonist, and the parallel psychological journey she goes through, including the self- defence mechanisms she employs to alleviate conflict.
