Abstract:

The Arabic novel, which first emerged with translations from Western novels, developed rapidly with the efforts of Arab writers. The Arabic novel, which developed into different genres, also included a new genre, the detective novel, after World War II. Just like the general art of the novel, the Arabic detective novel first emerged in Western literature and then entered Arabic literature through translation activities. The Arabic detective novel, which later began to develop with the efforts of writers from various Arab countries, especially Morocco, Algeria and Egypt, reached an important stage especially in the nineties. Despite the significant progress expressed, the Arab detective novel remained somewhat weak compared to the Western detective novel due to various reasons. The main reasons in question were the lack of a free environment that detective novels needed in Arab countries, the negative thoughts of Arab writers towards detective novels and the lack of knowledge required by Arab novel writers to write detective novels. In this article, the birth and development of the detective novel in Western literature, which is its homeland, is discussed, followed by the birth and development processes in Arabic literature, and then the basic structural elements specific to Arabic detective novels are discussed. In this article, which also provides a brief technical analysis of Arabic detective novels in general, issues such as time, place and character in Arabic detective novels are discussed. In this context, how time, place and characters are handled in Arab detective novels has been examined.
